But all this aside, unless you are using a very new Mac that simply cannot
boot OS 9, and assuming you have no access whatsoever to a copy of OS 9
(highly unlikely), then why not simply take a few seconds to boot into OS 9
and enjoy compatible Appletalk connections?

Sure, I too would love to connect with my older Macs using Tiger running on
my G4 Cube. I don't like to boot OS 9. But I'd rather do that than fire up
Classic. And the fact is, my modern 1.7GHz G4 Cube can indeed connect to my
older Macs with OS 9. I do that all the time to share files with my 40MHz
Turbo 040 accelerated SE/30.

Now, I have a related-but-slightly-different question about the 512k Mac
mentioned above...

I assume this is an original 512k with 64k ROMS, as opposed to the newer
512KE (with 128k Mac Plus ROMS)? If so, is there a limit to the number of
files that the 512k can see on a new Mac connected to it on the network?

For example, say I have a G4 Cube running OS 9 connected via Ethernet (and
hub) to an SE/30 running some flavor of System 7. The SE/30 has the Apple
Localtalk Bridge control panel installed. If I then connect a Mac512K to
the SE/30 via PhoneNet (to the printer port), all 3 Macs are then linked.
So the G4 Cube can see the HD of the SE/30 and the 512k, and the two old
Macs can see the Cube. I know that the SE/30 can see all the files on the
Cube, but is there a limitation to the number of files the 512k can see
across the network?

I've not tried it which is why I ask. But I was reading an old 1984 edition
Macworld about the limit to the number of files that a 512k Mac can see when
connected to a hard disk. That's why there was no real meaning to connect a
hard disk larger than about 20MB to the original Mac512 because it couldn't
deal with sizes larger than that. Therefore, my question is, if the Mac512k
can't deal with even a 30MB hard disk, then how does it handle localtalk
access to a modern Mac that has a multi-Gigabyte hard drive and 10's of
thousands of files?

Many thanks,

James Wages
