Well, I was finally able to view my billing detail, and I wasn't charged
roaming for any incoming calls. Looks like the call forwarding worked as I
expected it to.

I was however charged for 5 text messages at $0.35 each sent to
"206-313-0004 Washington,us" which are classified on the bill summary as
"Txt Msg Sent Roaming." I was a little disappointed by this as (although I
didn't really believe her) the customer service rep I spoke with before I
left told me that since I have a messaging plan on my account, text messages
would be deducted from my message bucket and I wouldn't pay any roaming fees
for them. I'm going to try contesting it when I get back, and hopefully she
properly documented the misinformation in the notes on my account.

I remember a previous thread regarding "phantom" messages to the message
center number, but I don't remember hearing of a resolution. I was
wondering if anyone knew what I could expect if I called customer service on
it. I would look in my message log to see if I could associate the time and
date of the charge to the message center number with a legitimate text
message I sent while roaming, but alas, my Blackberry's fried. (I'll save
that for another thread though.)

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure. My understanding is that as long as the network
knows to go straight to voicemail, the call won't come looking for me here.
And thus, I shouldn't be charged anything. I called tmo before I left and
they said that if I let A call ring through here and go to voicemail, I
would be charged 1 min of roaming for the call coming to find me here. My
bill cycle just ended, but it's not yet available for viewing. I will check
in a couple days and let you know.

Does setting your phone to Call Forward Unconditional to voicemail
actually get rid of the roaming charges? In that case, I'm
interested... I am going to Peru in January, and I want to get my
email, etc. on my Blackberry but not pay for any phone calls. I'll
take another phone with me to make local calls using a local SIM.

Are you sure that TMO won't charge you for any of the forwarded calls?
Did you switch CFU on before you left the States or after you arrived
in Jamaica? (Shouldn't matter-- you anyways will be tagged "roaming"
by the local VLR and by your home HLR, otherwise they can't figure out
how to route your internet traffic to you...)

 Thanks for the clarification....

unconditionally forward all calls directly to voicemail to avoid tmo's
outrageous roaming charges and activated the $20 unlimited international
blackberry service so I'm still connected in that way. I've gotten a prepaid
sim here for about $5. Calls from here back to the states on it are about
$0.25 a min which is much better than tmo's world class $1.50 per min.
