Couple of things:

- Assignment of contract. I'm not a lawyer, but I do work a lot with
contract. I'll bet you money that there is an automatic assignment clause
that you agreed to as part of TMO-US's general Terms of Service. This means
that, in case of a change of control for TMO-US (read: acquisition), your
contract would automatically be assigned to the new company. That way, TMO
(or AT&T) wouldn't break your contract! Another way around could be to
leave TMO-US as a subsidiary of the acquiring company in control. This
wouldn't stop them from changing their marketing name to AT&T! Remember
that AT&T itself is nothing more than an acquisition of the "old" AT&T by
Southwestern Bell (SBC), and subsequently has gobbled up a bunch of other
US carriers. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT%26T

- I think for most customers, the loyalty to their carrier is dictated by
price, network coverage & speed, device offer, and customer service (in
random order). There is little difference in roaming offering between the
several carriers (yes, you need a roaming-enabled multi-band/mode device if
you are with Verizon or Sprint). My AT&T iPhone works everywhere where my
TMO MyTouch 4G Slide works.
