Actually, I was trying to retain the names that have already come into common usage, rather than create new and more accurate names that are less likely to be used. While I certainly recognize the importance of clear nomenclature, and am quite fond of academic arguments, I think in a field where common names have already come into use, it's worthwhile to preserve them for general discussion, but also have a more technical nomenclature available. Thus, I was proposing "warp-patterned" and "weft-patterned" as convenient "common names" for the two structures already called "missed-hole techniques". > I know this is all academic.. and may seem dry hair-splitting. > Also a technique often acquires a shortened name... like 'double-faced' .. > used in speech and notes, whereas a more accurate name is too > cumbersome for such use. Yes, exactly. I was trying to distinguish between two very different things which happened to have the same colloquial name, without coming up with something too cumbersome to actually use. > Enough... Okay, then I'll stop too. :) I'm a botanist by profession, and can go on at great length about nomenclature and the varying roles of common and technical names. :) Sarah Sarah Goslee http://www.stringpage.com -- _______________________________________________ Sign-up for your own FREE Personalized E-mail at Mail.com http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup Meet Singles http://corp.mail.com/lavalife Send private reply to "Sarah Goslee" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ----------------------------------------------------------- To stop receiving tabletweaving (not tabletweaving-digest), send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: unsubscribe tabletweaving.
