Actually, I was trying to retain the names that have already come into common usage,
rather than create new and more accurate names that are less likely to be used.

While I certainly recognize the importance of clear nomenclature, and am quite fond
of academic arguments, I think in a field where common names have already come
into use, it's worthwhile to preserve them for general discussion, but also have
a more technical nomenclature available. Thus, I was proposing "warp-patterned" and
"weft-patterned" as convenient "common names" for the two structures already
called "missed-hole techniques".

Yes, exactly. I was trying to distinguish between two very different things
which happened to have the same colloquial name, without coming up with something
too cumbersome to actually use.

Okay, then I'll stop too. :) I'm a botanist by profession, and can go on at
great length about nomenclature and the varying roles of common and technical
names. :)
