The quality of a digital camera's image depends mainly on two things:

1) the quality of its optics
2) the resolution of the sensor

The top-of-the-line digital cameras currently have about a 6 megapixel
resolution, which is almost the same as 35mm slides (except that the
color resolution on a 6-megapixel camera is only about 1.5 megapixels,
unless it is a Foven sensor, but the only camera with a Foveon sensor
is about 3.5 megapixels). A 35mm slide has a resolution of between 6
and 20 megapixels, depending mainly on the speed of the film, but 12
megapixels may be a reasonable equivalent for all but the best
professional photos.

So, right now, 35mm still has an edge over digital cameras for
maximum resolution work.
