>I think one of the problems is the price of the upper-end digital cameras
that will do the kind of images that Peter, I and others need for analysing
textiles.

Yes I agree, but the price of a good 35mm and film and developing has to be
taking into consideration too, I estimated I spent 300pounds per annum on
film and developing which help my decision, although I've still not got the
best I'd like !

>I have a question for you, Mel: how good would a digital camera be for
taking clear close-up pictures of, say, cathedral ceilings if I want to see,
in perfect detail, carvings on the, oh, bosses?

Like a 35mm camera alot will depend on the lens and the amount of zoom you
have, I'm trying to think if I have anything that would help to illustrate
this. Certainly an SLR digital with a big lens should do at least as well as
most SLRs 35mm with the same lens. The advantage on most digitals is you
have both a physical zoom and a digital zoom so you can get nearer for less
hardwear in theory. I'll try and pop over to the Church in a bit and see
what I can get there at the tallest point and email it too you.

I wasn't saying BTW that they replace 35mm in everything as yet, but I think
they will, but rather that they are so much handier to carry around and to
use for many many things. For things I'm unsure os I take both the digital &
the 35mm (Canon Eos) for safety, but because the digital is so good the 35mm
gets out less & less. Some of the most impressive photos I've had are from
caves in France which the digital handled really well. The detail is great
