The first pass on the clean up started a few hours ago. So far, over 20k ways have been removed. The nodes from those ways are left behind for now, they'll be cleaned up shortly, with the stand-alone nodes (like imported communication towers).
So If you go editing and see a bunch of abandoned nodes. That's what's going on.
