This should not be difficult at all using WMP. Before ripping the cd onto
your hard drive, while in Media Player, press Alt-T for tools, O for
options. Shift tab to the tab controls and right arrow to the rip tab
control. Now tab to the format combo box and select MP three. Tab to OK and
press Enter.

I've been trying to convert a CD to mp3 format using Windows media
player that comes with Windows 7. I'm finding it a good bit more difficult
than it was with XP. Does anyone have any ideas?
