Kim, even three years ago, and as it is now, there were NO multiple finger taps on an Android phone! I began using a touchscreen Android phone three years ago myself! Against the advice of many so-called accessibility gurus, I didn't choose an iPhone! Why? First, it didn't fit snugly in my hands when I played with it for several hours at a phone store near me; second, it was overtly proprietary much to much for my liking; third, it didn't give me much sufficient space to roam as I wish; fourth, it didn't have an SD card slot, what a bummer!!
I turned around and played with an Android phone, what a splendid surprise! I could install almost any TTS engine I care--Vocalizer, Eloquence, Acapela, and the list goes on. There were multiple apps in the Android ecosystem that enabled me to do what I want to get done. I purchased a Samsung S5 which was one of the many ones on the top of the line three years ago and, what do I know--an SD card slot, a removable battery, excellent battery life, in fact, up till now, I charge the battery in my phone once every two days! And that's with everything running: GPS, data, WI-FI, bluetooth, and I don't know what I am forgetting, <shame on me>!! My phone is left on 24 hours a day, never turned off for any reason known or unknown. Except for LG devices, most Android phones are beginning to do away with removable battery, but I am into Samsung, the SD card slot is still present and that's good. There are far too many phones in the Android ecosystem so much so that recommending one could create an unpleasant bias! Sony, LG, Blue Phone, HTC, Xiaomi, Motorola and Honor are examples of some phones in this ecosystem. Even Google does have its own brand! My opinion: If you want and feel like giving Android another crack, go to the nearest phone store, play with a few off the shelf and settle for the one that fits snugly in your humble hands. There will be a learning curve for sure; but you'll get it if you understand that Android phones and the iPhone are NOT similarly situated. The approaches of each OS is different and, besides, you MUST HAVE MORE THAN AN OUNCE of patience to master the new system. Android has the Talkback screen reader; there's yet another one being used by many, it's called ShinePlus! Samsung, on the S6 and S7 series, has Voice Assistant as a TTS engine in addition to Google TTS! On these, Talkback DOES NOT come preinstalled, but it is an easy download from the Playstore. That said, I just love Android because of the many options I have to play with. For less than $300, I can get an Android phone and be on the same playing field as folks with more expensive brands.
