Do you think doing that would possibly take care of the problem I am having where it doesn't track certain emails correctly? Pam.

So, just so we can get things back to the original reason why I wrote
the email in the first place, I'm really happy to say that re-installing
the default apps and set files did the trick, and now Thunderbird works
again on the Windows 7 machine it wasn't reading on before.  So, all is
well again.
