Or even just an unmoderated, anyone-can-post-without-being-subscribed mailing list staffed by some faithful volunteers who could provide more friendly responses than http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gis.openstreetmap/50322 (which is not to pick on Richard - his response was to an OSM regular and not a newbie - the fact of the matter is that a newbie wouldn't have even found the list in the first place).
