You select the tool, then select a road/street, its name is catched by the tool, then enter the first number and increment/decrement and each next click will create the address node automatically with the chosen increment/decrement. It created associatedStreet relations by default (but can be switched to use addr:street on nodes if you prefer), and allows to add addresses on nodes or building polygons. Adding 10000 addresses in Paris took me around 10 hours (roughly 1000 addresses/hour). Most addresses in France are added that way.
