Francis,
Just for fun, I started this old version again and almost everything I
*do* actually need (I don't use IMAP) was already available, just much
much quicker, using a fraction of the actual memory.
3.5 version is definitely not three times better than 1.41 was; I just
wonder what happened. The developers probably didn't bother to get rid of
old
useless routines and wrote new code on them, very much in the
Microsoft way. Or am I wrong?
If you did use IMAP, you might think it was three times something, if not
better.
Screens take more room than program code does. You might count actual
screens.
There is a lot of new stuff in the Tools menu, I suspect. Smart Bat for
one thing. And pgp,
and privacy.
There is an old common sense understanding that you come to sometimes. If
the old version
does everything you need, don't move to the new one. There is no reason to
do that.
We are not representative of prospective new email client buyers. In fact
we are a fairly unique
group, not counting the fact that we are scattered to the corners of the
globe. We are mostly
pretty computer literate, some of us are programmers ourselves. What does
it take to attract new
email client buyers in today's market? We have no idea. New buyers call
the shots, not us. No
matter how loud we shout.
It seems like those who write email software are hearing people say they
want some sort of
calendaring, scheduler capability. Mulberry and Pocomail have recently
added a large calendars
section. Maybe the strategy is to attract more business users and fewer
geeks. Business users
usually don't know enough to complain much, and they are willing to pay
higher prices.
Probably the main dilemma for those who write email software is that the
main contender, the one
with 80% of the market, is free. How do you convince somebody who can get
it for free to spend
$50-60? You had better have a lot of gimmicks and sparklies.
