Let's see. How would an TB with an external editor work?

Suppose I reply to a message (like just now), I will still need the
send/put in outbox/etc buttons. I will also still want the header
information being transferred and editable.

However, I want to type and edit my actual message in my editor of
choice. The "main subwindow" of the editor would be replaced by that
editor. TB will open an instance of it. Of course, I will have less
screen space, but what the heck, I just love that editor's features so
much (presumably).

When I'm finished replying, I will click on Put in Outbox, the text
will be transferred to TB, and the instance of the external editor
closed. The messages will be stored just the same way as now, the
external editor would also not double as a viewer.

I can also imagine that data be transferred from TB to the external
editor unpon opening the instance, so the usage of macros (and
RegExp's) will still be there.

OTOH, if I do want to use TB's editor, I leave the configuration item
"Use external editor" unchecked.

How's this idea?
