Nope, won't work. Say, WinEdt will allow you to delete the file you're editing, 
using another application. And it's a good thing IMHO. For example, when I'm 
using TeX, it's pretty good idea to have the log file always opened, so that I 
can glance through the TeX warnings (my current system is fast enough not 
to let me read them when TeX compiles the file<g> I can't read that fast;-)). 
So WinEdt just *lets* TeX overwrite the <filename>.log file being opened in 
the editor, no problem. It would be bad IMHO if my editor didn't provide the 
support for this. BTW, WinEdt has the option to switch to the opposite 
behaviour, too;-)

Would work, but it's not universal. It doesn't take care of all the possible 
cases;-(
