Let's draw a line.
In order to read mail you should
a) fetch a mail
b) read it
In order to send mail you should
a) compose a mail
b) send it
Fetching and sending mail could be done using external dedicated
program. For the convinience of users it could be great to implement a
way to communicate with the mail server.
So a mail program should at least read/compose and optionaly
fetch/send.
You are using mail, so at least you should organize it a bit. Thus
your client should at least be able to organize. It also should offer
a way to search for particular messages. You could also use external
program to do that but because the implamentation of mail organizing
is yours the search function should be yours, too.
So mail reading means at least you should have a way to
fetch/read/write/send/organize/search mail.
All the other things are optional.

If your coffee machine blew out at random times you would have rather
different opinion.
