    Actually, it is done by external dedicated programs.  They're called SMTP
servers.  ;)

    Well "compose" as in build the headers, manipulate text as needed to feed
to and accept from an editor.  Editing text is a completely different
application, IMHO.

    More specifically, the messages are, for all intents and purposes, a
database.  One would expect all of the standard tools of a database to be
present since that is what it is.  Sort, filter, search, file, disaster
recovery, etc.

    Bingo.  That is what I have called the "core" application in other
messages.  That core, to me, is severely lacking.  To pull a pun, most email
clients have a rotten core.  Sure, they look pretty, but bite into it, really
sink your teeth into it and you find it is sour inside with no substance.

    TB! is good in some areas (database management) than other clients and
worse in other areas (IMAP).  These core functions need to be addressed,
refined and made robust and powerful before one can really look to the
ancillary options like html viewing/composing, a foofie editor, spell checker,
etc, etc, etc...
