That's a good question. It's not easy being a moderator. :-(
Anyway, here's my take on the situation:
As a moderator, whose mission is to keep the list running smoothly, I
have to decide when I see discussions going sour, in terms of posters
getting dangerously personal or miserable, whether or not we will gain
from any further discussion in such as situation.
In my experience on this list, discussions continuing to be beneficial
in such a negative atmosphere is highly unlikely. In fact it's far more
often disruptive and has a lot of other subscribers complaining.
In this case, I decided to err on the side of caution and stop it
because afterall, the relevant points were already made. Any further
discussion would have likely become circular.
