Do what makes you feel comfortable. I keep them in the messages, that way I get rid of them in three months, unless it's something special. Usually important are stored on a place that makes sense when I want to retrieve them and that's not in my messagebase. Files that are thought to be unsafe are killed by my mailserver's virusscanner.
