Well, to get out of being irritated with all this configurability -
Enable the default column setting for all your folders. Set up one
folders view to what you want. All the other folders will follow.
Done.

If you have a folder which you need to view in a different way, then
disable the default column settings and configure it as you like.

This is the approach I've taken. It's really not that bad. :-)
