What skill or skills do you want to learn or feel you have to learn to further your career? This could be an application, a methodology, or something else you feel is important to your career. Interesting question. I'm about to take the plunge and set up Linux as a dual boot on one of my machines because a couple of clients have apps that run in both Windows and Linux, and it's hard to write the Install Guide on a system you can't run. And besides, I want to see what all the ballyhoo is about. Other than that, I learn what I need to learn for each gig I get. It's almost always something I've never done before. A couple of years ago it was network management, most recently it's been software export regulations about encryption, and I hope the next one is DSP chip internals or broadband over power lines. It's like that law of management: Don't bother trying to schedule extra time for coping with problems because no matter what you plan for, reality will always be worse. It's all the diversity and demands to learn new things that make it interesting to be a technical communicator. My 2¢, John Garison |
