When you make a decision to leave, regardless of the conditions, and you announce that decision...you really have to leave. It's a rare situation where the counter offer is sincere and long term, or that the reasons convincing you to leave will change. In most cases, upper management will view you as no longer loyal to the cause and therefore replaceable. You can bet your bottom dollar that your replacement is close to the top of the hiring list. Besides, if the position was so good, you would have never looked for something else.
