I take your points, a couple of things here.

The chap I got the Voice Sense from was terribly frustrated with the device, at
the time there was a very annoying bug in the firmware which caused scheduled
alarms to go off at randome times, I never personally had trouble but the bug
was very well documented to say the least.

Hims Inc fixed the problem in a subsequent firmware update and - to be fair to
the person I bought the unit from - I offered it back to him but he wasn't
interested, by that time he'd moved onto an iPhone and iPad and he hasn't
looked back.

Well designed technology stands the test of time and this is what we have to
convince other people of. A mountbatten Braille Writer for example, its been
around for 24 or so years and still in use.

I have an iPhone 3GS kicking around here somewhere, when I last powered it up
everything worked, granted some of my favourite Apps wouldn't work but
Voiceover did, one could use the phone to make phone calls which is exactly
what a Mobile Phone is designed for so - if someone can pick one of these
devices up for $50.00 or so - then they have a bargain.

And thirdly (A Personal point of view) I think too many people expect things to
be given to them.

Take the Voice Sense in my case I thought it only fair to offer the owner at
least something as I realised just how much he'd spent on the equipment. If
I'd offered absolutely nothing then he had every right to throw the equipment
away so offering the person with the Voice Sense something in return meant we
both benefited, the chap had some cash he could put towards his future
technological investment and I had the machine I had been dreaming of owning.
