Agreed.
If you're going to have a properly functioning home network, and you have VOIP & Tivo devices; simply using DHCP to manage the whole lot is not good procedure.

What about a network printer - those need hard IP's.

Just set fixed addresses for all the devices that can do so. That's what I
 do. NO conflicts ever.
