By using *any* ThinkPad docked you're likely to get it hotter, not cooler. 
Unless one is using a fanned dock, which I don't believe exists for T6x range
?
The machine needs to be on a firm surface so the heat can be disbursed from the 
bottom..."raising" it the way you had in mind would be counterproductive in 
this respect.

Ok that explains it :( 
Shame as i was hoping to use it as a "riser" and to keep the t60  
cooler when running off battery. 
 
Thanks for the information about the ethernet I have managed to find  
the manual but it says 
just about nothing apart from plug it in to the power and put an  
ethernet cable in. :(
