My T60 and one of the docks came each came with the same power supply - same connector, same amperage, same voltage. Although I do know that Lenovo sells different amperage power supplies, I apparently bought the larger one with my unit.

What I meant by "special" is that you can't use the adapter that comes with the 
laptop - different plug shape, and higher amperage output.

Hmm I am sure my x30 ultrabay worked off battery.
Yes, it requires a special power adapter in order to function.  Certain aspects
still work (like ethernet pass-through), but much of it (such as the USB ports)
does nothing unless it's plugged in to the wall.
