Yes but you are still limited to the bus bandwidth of USB 3.
That's your bottleneck--it's a maximum of 4.8Gbps/sec. So
I was wrong about the speed: it isn't 1000 times slower.
But still painful.

ps: modern flash drives are not going to wear out with lots
of use. Early ones did, but that was years ago. I have a
USB drive that I tested, with more than 1 millions writes of
a small file, erase, and write. It's still good.
