For the benefit of anyone else needing to set up Thunderbird filters to move Hotmail (or other webmail services) messages to folders in Thunderbird. First create the folder that you want to move the messages to. Right click on "Inbox" in TB and select "New Folder", name the new folder to whatever you want. You'll probably want to match the folder name you use in Hotmail, but you can name it anything you like. Then open one of the messages you want to move. From the "View" menu select "View message source". Look for the "X-Folder: xxxxxx" line. Note the exact wording and spelling, or copy the whole line to the clipboard.
Close the source and message Windows and go back to the main TB Window.
From the "Tools" menu select "Message Filters...", then click on the "New" button. Select "Customise" from the drop down menu under subject. In the new message header box type "X-Folder" (or paste the header line you copied to clipboard and delete everything except X-Folder). OK back to the New Filter box and put the rest of the header line in the box after the "Contains" drop down menu, (or copy and paste then remove X-Folder: , leaving the xxxx bit). I would set the drop down menu option to "Is" rather than "Contains", but I think that either will work. In the "Actions" section of the new filter select "Move to" and your new folder created in the first step. You'll probably want to use the "Run now" option in the main filter dialogue box to run your new filter and move any mails already downloaded before you close the filters dialogue. After this, all new mails should automatically be moved as they're received.

Alan,

First this subject will probably get beaten a lot more as time goes
by. There is always going to novices at this coming here and other
places for help. Not all users know about the pop3 standard; they just
want to able to get their mail. All we can and need to do is stick
together and help other.

Second, I not knocking the webmail author any at all. He and the
others (several are list in the xpi) have done very good at getting
the xpi's working. From what your saying is that are limitations that
xpi's are currently unable to get around in TB as far as automating
some things and it must be done message filters.

When I click Help on Thunderbird it only briefly references message
filters. With trial and error approach I did finally found that I had
to use the custom feature and setup a X-folder message header option.

I am by no means anywhere near expert on TB or and even less on the
pop3 protocol. Personally I learning more each day about TB through
both with online help plus trial and error. Probably most 50+ people
wouldn't even attempt to create a new xpi program to work with webmail
add-on especially without any formal programming training but I going
to give it a good try. I am usually fairly good at figuring out
puzzles.

To me if there was a complete Detailed Thunderbird Manual would be a
little nice,. I have yet find one. If know where I can download a
detail manual on TB and the webmail add-on please let me know.

I am trying to setup an extension for another webmail site add-on
here. So far the only way I found to get it done is to tear other
xpi's apart and study them plus trial error approach to programming
one. Hoping in a few weeks to start experimenting accessing the
webmail account. I have got the about section working and now working
setting up an options section as time permits here. With a lot more
research I yet might get it to work.
