I don't see how we can easily distribute the load on the name servers.
With regards to the nameservers themselves, beyond having good
secondaries that are well distributed, the only other useful
technique I know of involves routing tricks and anycasting, such as
what ISC does with the 50+ installations of f.root-servers.net around
the world.
For more information on anycasting and how ISC does this at their
f.root-servers.net installations around the world, check the ISC Tech
Notes at <http://www.isc.org/pubs/tn/>, especially
<http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/pubs/tn/index.pl?tn=isc-tn-2003-1.html>.
With regards to general local network high availability/high
performance configurations, see
<http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/pubs/tn/index.pl?tn=isc-tn-2004-1.html>.
If we decide that we want to try to do this with BIND, I know the
guys at ISC who are involved in the operations for
f.root-servers.net, and I'm pretty sure that we could get assistance
from them.
