Very, very interesting topic indeed. It looks like the OOReport designer module needs to go thru a beta testing phase, but it's somehow weird to pay to become a beta tester.... More reasons to wait before paying. :(
Now the problem is really difficult to solve: the modules will be reliable when enogh people have tested them, but not enough people will test them if they're "hidden". And I understand the concerns about funding new developments... Why not use some sort of paying subscription for the last releases? Here's the idea: the last version will be sent to paying subscriptors while the previous release will be public. A public list of known and resolved bugs for each version will show what fixes one should expect to get from the subscribers version while a larger install base could further test functionality: buggy public version - bug-fix version "shared funded". After all the development gets funded, no more two versions. Does it sound right?
