I nerver spend more time than migrating version 4.2 to 5.0 !! Even migrating 
from 3.5 to 4.0 (through all revision, like .6, .7, etc..) was easier !! 

I think you will spend less money making 2 small migrations (with well test 
script and procedure, cause a lot people have done it) than trying to migrate a 
huge release (where ensure the test of every cases is quite impossible...).
