"How many of you take class time to go over exams after they are corrected? Whether you do or don't, what is your rationale? Thanks, I appreciate your responses."
After little quizzes I discuss the answer(s) immediately. These quizzes are more of a learning tool than an assessment. After multiple choice tests I always give students back their Scantron answer sheets (with correct options marked) and a copy of the test (all of which I collect back). I give them time to look over the test and ask individual questions. For the first test especially, I give them hints for looking over their completed test in a diagnostic fashion (to look at what types of questions they got wrong, which chapters were stronger/weaker, etc.). I don't go over the test question by question because the main weakness among my students is simply not studying much in the first place (not that they are misunderstanding the test questions). Students who did fairly well on the test always like to see which ones they got wrong. Students who did poorly don't really care about the individual questions, but while they are sitting there waiting, they ask some good questions about the course structure and grades: after the first test all of the sudden they are interested in these things!
