The random part may not fit someone reading along, but as a data point, I got 
as far as the abstract the first time around. That is because I had a reason to 
ask something on the mailing lists, and did not have several hours to read 
through these documents before asking my DNS-bug-I-found related question.

Here is a quote from said abstract:

> the IETF and Internet communities while permitting the authors to
> retain as many rights as possible.

That quote is quite misleading in hindsight...
