In my maildirs, HOSTNAME isn't a FQDN:

   drew@williams:~(746)$ ls ~/Maildir/inbox/new | head
   1024689641.19672.williams:2,S 1036867761.960.williams
   1025034170.3351.williams:2,S 1036868599.994.williams
   1026217563.24277.williams:2,S 1036869830.1027.williams
   1026345886.18423.williams:2,S 1036874414.1159.williams
   1026391239.20511.williams:2,S 1036875297.1179.williams
   1026486114.25538.williams:2,RS 1036875300.1186.williams
   1026486664.25563.williams:2,S 1036879284.1290.williams
   1026490722.25963.williams:2,RS 1036880260.1309.williams
   1026858225.12418.williams:2,RS 1036880260.1313.williams
   1027108251.25046.williams:2,S 1036880316.1323.williams

Just adding the host part of the FQDN wouldn't make the
confirmation address too long (unless it's a confirmation from an
expired dated address, of course).
