one. (One fix, which would work for Bugster as well, would be to
demand that RPE engineers working on an escalation set the RE
    field to themselves.)
We (Solaris RPE) are assigning as RE ourselves even today. At least we
should do it.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Lazy RPEs (including myself probably) :-)

Also the use of the SubCR plays a part here and whether the bug
is going to be fixed by development in the development source as
part of some other wad and then a simple backport to the sustained
releases undertaken by RPE.

The point I was making was that Bugzilla
lacks any easy way to find out if there is an escalation. At least
with Bugster, I can double-check to see if there is one before plowing
ahead.

I understand. With Bugster you see very clearly if it is escalated or
not (e.g. e-mail subject is modified).

It's unclear to me what happens a Bugzilla world. It could be any of:

  - We keep the escalation tool, and users are just forced to punt
(filing a duplicate CR in Bugster?) when it comes to Bugzilla-
    tracked bugs.

  - Perhaps there's some equivalent escalation-tracking tool in the
Bugzilla world, and we could just switch to using that.

  - Maybe escalations just go away, and we do all the tracking in
    Bugzilla comments.

In any event, some thought about that interface is probably necessary.

I heard that Al Ikner is involved in this process and he is working on
other (not so relevant here) changes in escalation process. So I would
recomend to speak with him.

Al is aware of this and it is being taken into account.
