Like others in this thread I am a fairly technical and have done some work with embedded systems. That said, I didn't buy a Touch to keep me technically challenged. Rather, I bought it to replace my SB3 under the assumption that the Touch was ready to answer the obvious demand for a low cost and reliable embedded solution. As a player it works just fine, and ought to, as it has about 3 years of newer technology to incorporate. But has server it is very finicky and certainly not ready for prime time. As I anxiously await the 7.6 release I also browse related posts.
I appreciate the insights of John S and have tried start-up sequences like he describes, but never with much luck. I have about 8000 songs in a 60gig iTunes library on a 500gig Seagate FreeAgent USB powered drive (i.e., no external power supply). Most of the music is ripped to ACC, with some MP3s. The problems I encounter are numerous and random, mostly involving the server losing touch with the music library. Sometimes the drive appears to go way, other times just the library. Suspecting issues with the iTunes library and/or USB powered drive I ripped about 8 gigs of music as uncompressed FLAC and put it on a thumb drive as a test. Happily, it works like a charm and this shows promise. Unhappily, I have changed several things at once - file format, library size, and drive type, and likely drive power requirements - and don't know my next move. Do I re-rip everything to FLAC, try a powered spinning drive, buy a big and expensive solid-state drive, wait for a server upgrade, continue to tinker with my original set up, all of the above? Any advice is appreciated. I want to stress that I am a technical guy, a longtime and happy Squeezebox owner, and a patient consumer. But seriously Logitech, how hard can this be? Just go to the computer store, buy a bunch of various USB drives, rip a bunch of music in various formats, sort out the server issues, and when it works ship to your customers. I thought that is what they were doing the past 6 months. -- asher ------------------------------------------------------------------------ asher's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8631 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78386 _______________________________________________ Touch mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
