Regarding USB powered hard drives look here:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Touch_as_a_Home_Music_Server

It says "Most of these drives will not operate properly.." it really is
some of these drives.

If it is "USB certified" it should be ok. USB harddrive manufacturers
often cheats regarding this spec the drive uses more amps than the USB
spec alows.
Many (not all) laptops and PC's have USB connectors that in practice
supply more power than the spec. The Touch don't.

Tell tale sign of this if you get an extra USB cable that thats ends in
a power plug in the package ;) Or like I read in some WD manual a
special cable can be ordered -if your pc can not support the power
needed-.
It probably has two USb connectors in one end.

What I would do if I'm going to use the Touch this way, get an USB
drive with it's own power supply and use it probably an 3,5" drive.
I got a nice one from verbatim as backup disc.

Or most likely I go to the PC shop get one of those USB hard-drive
chassis with power supply for 3,5" drives and put a WD 1TB green drive
in it. Then I would also avoid being spammed with all this software and
strange setups you get with one of these drives, you always ending up
repartition/reformatting them anyway to get rid of that cr*p.
