It's not as if there is an ethernet cord hanging from the ceiling when you're done. Instead it runs to a wall plate on the wall or baseboard. Just like we've been doing with telephone lines, electrical wiring, and cable tv for years. Frequently it is a real pain to do it in existing construction, but I've been surprised how many easy routes I have found to add ethernet around the house without opening up a wall. And of course when we did an addition the cat5e cable went in while the walls were open.
