I can't disagree with you from my perspective, but it is not uncommon
for those on the outside of a hobby to use terminology differently than
those who have been immersed in a subject for any length of time. 

I'd suggest that most people on the outside would be perfectly
comfortable with the term "sound quality" to describe what he meant.
EQ/tone controls can make the bass more prominent, the highs a bit more
sparkly, voices clearer and so on. Many "lay people" would describe that
as better "quality" even if it was a gross deviation from what an audio
purist would want.

This reminds me of, in the mid-1970s, when I sold stereo equipment and
virtually all amps still had tone controls. It was a given that roughly
95% of the people would crank up the bass & treble controls to 1 or 2
o'clock (or more). They just liked the way it sounded and weren't
concerned if that departed from some reference standard. 

Back to the original poster, I suspect that if the Touch had an
easy-to-use equalizer, he'd think it the greatest thing since sliced
bread.  ;-)
