Actually, I have such a device in my system (DSPeaker AntiMode Dual Core). Not that it needs to significantly lower overall volume when EQ is used -judiciously-. In my case, this means a 400db wide, 0.7db boost centered at 750db and a -1.0db cut above 5KHz. Also, I use the SBT's digital volume to control levels, all without any ill effects on SQ.
