You can't do in the  digital domain in any other way it will clipp
horribly otherwise ? Or apply more compression like some mp3 players to
make it sound " fatter " .

Wonder how my own system works ? No clipping afaik ( I tried the
extremes to ) but eq and volume is the same software so to speak , I
never investigated the innards of an iPad or an mp3 player ,but I bet
that volume is not analog .

So one can compensate that way , you may notice if the volume is already
at 100%
