Unless your NAS is running the LMS.

I guess that's one way of expressing it. The player takes the file that
is sent to it and converts the music data into suitable form for the
spdif and DAC.

Well, it is a binary flow, but perhaps not suited for the network in
it's raw form.

Well, all audio data is encoded in some way when in digital format.
spdif is a way to transmit PCM data to a DAC.
