Sounds like a software bug in the Linux USB audio code. Funny enough, I actually get exactly the same using pulseaudio on Ubuntu 12.10 with a Musical Fidelity V-DAC over USB. Occasionally (about once a day) the right channel suddenly gets very distorted. Killing the pulseaudio process fixes the problem. I don't think the SB uses pulseaudio, so the problem is probably in the USB driver. Interestingly, it seems both the V-DAC and the AN DAC 0.1x. seem to be non-asynch USB devices.
