I guess I finally asked the question right, because this is the clearest
answer I've seen yet.  Thank you.

So now that I know that any file I have that is 24/96 or higher will be
playing out of my system at 24/96, whether it goes through my external
DAC or just analog out of my SBT, I can A/B compare the two.

I've been itching and clawing toward 24/192, but the reality is, I
probably wouldn't hear much of a difference anyway, and besides, the
quality of the file goes well beyond just the bit depth/sample rate
specs.  So many variables......interesting though.

Thanks people.  I think I'll be hanging out here a bit more, learning.
