OK thanks.  I think I can leave the SB stock for now.

I'm just going to try setup SB as standalone for now with a powered USB
HDD as source cos it's a bedroom thing and the PC is turned off then.

So much new strangeness to me.  Build it and then I will see. @Brindle
gave me some good directions upthread too.
