If it's going to be 2009 before the new Palm phone/OS comes out, it had better have a huge WOW-factor. How many people out there will stick with a Palm phone that looks progressively more like a dumb-phone with every advance of the competition? A few Palm fanatics, sure, the faithful. But for Joe and Jane Sixpack, they'll be buying whatever replaces an iPhone. Whatever replaces the iPhone will draw in non-early adopters, and Palm will be left in the dust. It will take something incredible to get anyone to take a look.
Remember the last recession? Companies stopped putting up new cell towers for about 3 years. Imagine if the economy takes a serious downturn and R&D is put on the back burner.
