An update. Mostly good!

The bad (let's get it out of the way):

Well, really, that I had to go through this in the first place. The thing
should have just worked. Given that it didn't just work, I'd say Palm
response is a close second. It is, after all, a V.1 release of brand new
hardware and software.

While Palm did call me back and did resolve this issue better than the "old
Palm" would have, they did not call me back precisely when they said they
would. I've always been a big fan of doing what one says, and they said
they'd call me back twice and did not. When I finally called THEM, the guy
there was very worried about their lapse of good customer service, and went
and got the Level 3 guy personally, and the latter called me 10 minutes
later, as promised.

The Level 3 guy (on Tuesday) said that he'd overnight a new Pre, new
conducting cover and new Touchstone, and that I should have it Thursday at
the latest. Turned out that didn't quite happen. Fedex tried to deliver
the package on Saturday (I was gone) and did deliver it this morning. Palm
must have paid extra for Saturday delivery. Too bad I wasn't home!

The good:

The attitude of the Palm people is the most noticeable thing: they actually
care! The Level 3 guy wanted the old Pre, conducting cover and Touchstone
back so they could examine them and reproduce, and presumably solve, the
problem I was having. Outstanding!!

With the exception of minor lapses in time management, the whole thing ended
quite well. The new Pre/back/Touchstone charged up from 18% without
incident. Again, the process of activating a replacement Pre is about as
painless as it gets: They swap the IMEI code, I put in my Palm Profile and
password, and everything magically appears on the Pre. Almost everything.
Some settings have to be redone. Contact pictures have to be redone. Speed
dials have to be redone. Bluetooth pairing has to be redone. Homebrew apps
all have to be redone. Classic has to be reauthorized. So, some work still
for me.

New Pre: came with 1.1 installed. Keyboard is MUCH more solid than either
of my two previous Pre's - doesn't creak at all. Maybe the previous ones
were more solid at first and loosened up, but that's not my recollection.

All in all, with the exception of time and (minor) aggravation, a good
result.

Cheers,

Don

Subject: (Pre) Interesting development; anyone else have this problem?

Situation:

Pre with over 25% battery, put it on the Touchstone and it makes the jangle
sound, the lightning bolt symbol appears on the battery icon and it starts
charging.

Pre with UNDER 25% battery, put it on the Touchstone and:

Do Until I Can't Stand It Anymore

...Jangling sound happens, little lightning bolt symbol appears on
battery icon, Charging Battery thingy appears, charging starts

   ...Wait 5 to 120 seconds

...Little lightning bolt symbol disappears, charging stops

   ...Wait 2 to 10 seconds

...Little lightning bolt symbol reappears, charging starts again

End

Connect USB charging cable and get the battery over 25%

Resume normal charging on Touchstone

I called Palm and eventually got to Level 3 support. They're sending me a
new Pre, a new conducting back, and a new Touchstone. They want me to try
it all out and, if possible, send them back my Pre, my conducting back, and
my Touchstone(s) so they can examine them to see what's going on.

I think this might be a broader problem than just mine. My brother-in-law's
Pre has exhibited some odd behavior on the Touchstone as well.

Anyone?

Cheers,

Don
