When I moved to hosted Microsoft Exchange I had to take myself through a paradigm shift. Prior to that, I kept account numbers, ATM codes, passwords, etc. in my address book along with the entity associated with those data. Had done since my first Pilot 1000 in 1996. With the switch to hosted Exchange I stripped all that out and put it into a secure (encrypted) password manager on the PC/mobile. Nothing but names and addresses and email addresses and phone numbers in my address book now. I don’t worry too much about syncing with the Exchange host. I’d have to think a little harder before entrusting all my stuff to Google, but many of my clients already do.
Exchange is still more powerful than what Google offers, although the latter is catching up. Hosted Exchange costs, but then again so does the version of Google Apps that allows syncing with Outlook. There is still nothing that equals Outlook for overall PIM-type function on the Windows desktop nor anything that equals its ubiquity in interfacing with other products/services (no flames please – it’s just true, which is why Outlook still has over 80% of the market). You can use web-based tools to do most of it, but just try doing a mail merge to a category of your address book, or drag an email to the Task icon to create a todo based on that email, or some other somewhat esoteric things. Web-based email just isn’t there yet. I have no doubt it will be, as web-based apps and desktop based apps become one in the same over the coming years. For now, though, the local responsiveness of Outlook, combined with the power of Exchange in the back-end, combined with a smart phone (doesn’t matter if it’s iPhone, BB, Android, Pre, Centro) is an unbeatable (albeit not free) combination. I don't like having my info in the cloud but it seems there are no other options. As for music - I have a synchronize program on my computer that synchronized iTunes to my Pre by copying the files using the USB feature. This then allows me to play that music in my music app on the Pre. There are, also, free music streaming programs available - such as slacker radio. You may want to open your keyboard and with nothing active type APP - it will bring you to the APP Catalog. Browse through there - there are tons of things. I have a personal dislike for paying so I focus only on the free apps. But there are many good ones that charge a fee - not much, either. One other thing - which may not be obvious (wasn't to me). If you want other things - say calculator - you can do the same thing as you did to get the app catalog. Type a letter - say C - and the Pre will show you all the programs installed on your Pre that start with that letter. The more letters you type the more specific it gets. Hope this helps. As I suspected, you've all been very encouraging, and I'm putting my sim card BACK into the new Pre. I will try to trust the cloud, but isn't anyone else worried about having all their personal information out on the web, in the hands of some nameless conglomerate? I know this is an old topic, but up until today it's been a complete abstract to me. Now it's real, and I suddenly feel rather uncomfortable about it all, in an Orwellian context. And what about streaming music? Is there any way to do that other than the obscure apps I found in the AT&T app center? And . . . why can't I do a search on this board any longer? Has Yahoo! forsaken us?:D Chuck B. Ditto that. No matter what you move to today, you're going to have to go to the cloud. It's what Android, iPhone, and BB use as well. Local sync is a thing of the past. For a crutch, if you like using Outlook, but don't use an Exchange server, I recommend CompanionLink. It will sync your local Outlook and Google. Or you could be really retro like me - I sync my Google to my Palm desktop!
