Hey, don't be so hard on me.  I only advanced to using Outlook a year ago,
so to me it's "high tech".  Prior to that I was a Palm Desktop user for the
past 10 years.  :-)

Unconnected Outlook, or any PIM housed on a single PC, is dead tech. If it
doesn't have a cloud component (e.g., Exchange, Google, etc.), then it's not
going to be nearly as useful going forward.  Phones today assume Internet
connectivity and take advantage of that.  Relegating yourself to being
tethered to a specific PC is hamstringing you and your phone.  At least get
yourself a hosted Exchange account so you can take advantage of the benefits
of the cloud while still retaining your beloved Outlook as your PC
interface.
