I was thinking I'd answered this to thank you for the hint. It's not 
in my log, so ...
     Thanks. That did it. I had to uninstall ALL the launcher-related 
patches, then add in the Advanced and everything after that's working 
fine - except a recurring problem with Evernote, which might be worth 
another thread.
     But, except for I haven't yet tried the Uber overclock stuff, my 
Pre is back to working the way I want. Well, OK, maybe not perfectly, 
but since there's no replacement keyboard =)
     Maybe I'll give the virtual keyboard another try, see how those 
extra theme work with it.
